The Amnesty

Today UCLU Amnesty International Society organised the first greetings card and letter-writing session to support human rights activits emprisoned for their committments. This event is part of The Write for Rights Campaign, which runs yearly from 1 November to 31 December.
The first session focused on Eskinder Nega and Jabeur Mejri.
During these sessions, everyone is invited to write a letter of support directly to activists or an appeal letter targeting the authorities. It only takes a few minutes and can either give victims of “unfair” rulings hope and strengh to keep fighting or raise politicians’ awareness regarding human rights abuses.
The next writing sessions are announced on the blog or via Facebook events. But for those who cannot attend, it is possible to take part of the project online: select the person you would like to support and sign the petition by clicking on TAKE ACTION.
Eskinder Nega is a 44-year-old Ethiopian journalist who serves 18 years in prison for terrorism offences. He criticised the Ethiopian government and called for freedom of expression in speeches and articles.
Jabeur Mejri, 28 years old, is a Tunisian citizen serving a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence for publishing articles on, and pictures on the Prophet Mohammed on his Facebook page.
